Chapter Sixteen

The smell of the other woman’s fear hit me seconds before her face turned sheet white. I had given her a glimpse behind the curtain. Let her see what lies beneath. Make no mistake about it, I knew what I was, even though I fought it with every fiber of my being; I was a monster. A terror unleashed upon them all and the only thing standing between me and their complete destruction were my wobbly morals.

I sneered at her, relishing her terror of me. I was about to say something further when the door opened and Garrett was half carried in by the other man.

“Molly, stop scaring Stephanie.”

Stephanie startled, looking back and forth between us. I just shrugged and bared my teeth at her.

“Is someone going to explain just what in the fuck all is going on here?” The man I didn’t know shouted.

“Shamus, Stephanie, meet Molly Everett. She is going to be working with us.” Garrett replied as he laid back and closed his eyes against the bright lights over his head. My own eyes were feeling the strain, tears streaming from the pain of the light. I glanced down, somehow my sunglasses were still hooked to the front of my shirt, but with my hands tied I had no way to get them.

“Would someone please put my glasses on for me?” I asked as sweetly as possible. The contrast of the terror and my manners wasn’t lost on me.

“What the fuck is going on?” Shamus yelled even as he stomped over and slipped my glasses onto my nose. He did it quickly and from the head of the bed where I’d have a hell of a time biting him, if I so desired. Which I didn’t. Mostly.

“Thanks, Shamus, you’re a doll.” I smiled in a way I hoped would put him at ease, but he instead took several large steps backward and glared, keeping a death grip on his rifle as he did so.

Before anyone could say anything further, the door opened again and a short, somewhat heavier set woman walked in. She didn’t look up or acknowledge any of us in any way, just slipped gloves on in a swift, practiced motion before asking, “What’ve we got?” I heard the snap of her chewing gum and smelled the sharp tang of disinfectant on her.

“Hey, Rachel. I got knocked around in a car accident.” Garrett said, indicating his bleeding forehead with a wave of his hand.

“What about that one?” The woman lifting her chin in my direction.

“I got shot. I’m fine though. Mostly healed. Tend to Garrett.”

Her eyebrows flew up and her mouth popped open, revealing the pink gum inside. She looked at me and then back to Garrett, putting some of the pieces together. Shrugging her shoulders, she snapped orders at the others. Demanding gauze, a bowl of water, and clean towels she got to work.

“Head hit the windshield, huh?” Not waiting for him to respond, she lifted his shirt, clucking her tongue at the bruises on his chest and abdomen.
